CoinGecko has confirmed a data breach involving its third-party email platform, GetResponse, exposing over 23,000 users to phishing emails.
The breach, occurring on June 5th and announced on June 7th, was due to a compromised GetResponse employee’s email account, affecting the contact information of over 1.9 million users. Despite the breach, CoinGecko user accounts and passwords remain secure.
The attacker used the compromised data to send 23,723 phishing emails, aiming to trick individuals into revealing sensitive information.
CoinGecko advised users to avoid suspicious domains and links. The rise in phishing scams and deepfake technology poses new cyber threats, with significant cryptocurrency-related hacks increasingly due to private key leaks.
Recent scams have included deepfake videos impersonating Elon Musk to promote fraudulent schemes.
