Ethereum Celebrates 9th Anniversary Amid Debate

On July 30, 2024, Ethereum celebrates its ninth anniversary. Co-creator Vitalik Buterin marked the occasion on social media, highlighting the significance of “Launch Day.”

While blockchains often have two founding dates (the whitepaper publication and the network launch), Ethereum’s anniversary is set on the latter, which took place in 2015.

This avoids the complexity of anniversaries related to ICOs and multiple whitepaper versions. University of Dublin lecturer Paul Dylan-Ennis emphasized that Ethereum’s true birthday is the day the first block was mined.

Many in the community, including key contributors like Gavin Wood and Vlad Zamfir, gathered in Berlin nine years ago to witness this milestone. Ethereum is advancing as planned, with key upgrades and proposals in place.

The upcoming Verge upgrade will introduce Verkle trees, reducing node costs and increasing the layer-1 gas limit tenfold, making transactions cheaper.

The Purge upgrade will simplify the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) by removing certain features, enhancing its efficiency.
