Malaysia Crushes Over 900 Bitcoin Rigs in Power Theft Crackdown

Malaysian authorities destroyed 985 Bitcoin mining machines worth around $452,500 as part of a crackdown on power theft linked to cryptocurrency mining.

This effort is part of a broader initiative to combat electricity theft associated with Bitcoin mining in Malaysia.

The Deputy Minister for Energy Transition revealed that crypto miners in Malaysia stole at least $777 million worth of electricity from 2018 to 2023.

As reported by the Malaysia Gazette, police in Perak Tengah district used a steamroller on Monday to destroy the confiscated Bitcoin mining devices, following a court order. The machines were crushed following a court order after being seized during operations between 2022 and April 2023.

Additionally, police in Sepang district recently arrested seven individuals accused of running bitcoin mining operations that involved electricity theft.

Following China’s 2021 crypto mining ban, many mining operations have shifted to Southeast Asia, including Malaysia, due to favorable conditions.
