India Unites With Google, Facebook To Tackle Crypto Crime

India is partnering with Google and Facebook to combat pig butchering scams, a rising form of investment fraud using cryptocurrencies to lure victims and launder stolen funds.

These scams target vulnerable groups like unemployed youth, housewives, and students, exploiting their financial insecurities with promises of quick returns. Victims are losing significant sums of money daily, often from borrowed funds.

Scammers promote these schemes through Google ads and messaging platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram, making them harder to detect. To address this, India’s Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) is working with Google and Facebook to flag malicious ads, identify phishing campaigns, and detect fraudulent lending apps.

The government has also integrated crypto exchanges into a cyber fraud reporting system, enabling law enforcement to track and block suspicious cryptocurrency transactions. Specialized training programs for police officers are underway to improve their ability to trace crypto transactions and seize digital assets.

India’s rapid adoption of cryptocurrency has made it a prime target for fraud rings, particularly those operating from Southeast Asia. To strengthen oversight, India’s Financial Intelligence Unit mandated in 2023 that crypto exchanges register as reporting entities.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has taken major actions against crypto scams, including freezing $3 million linked to the Highrich Ponzi scheme and dismantling another fake cryptocurrency scam that caused victims to lose over $800,000.

India’s coordinated efforts with tech giants and law enforcement reflect a proactive approach to curbing crypto fraud and protecting citizens from financial crimes in the digital space.
