American Express Files Trademark Applications, Set to Join the Metaverse

Metaverse

American Express has filed 7 new trademark applications as part of its plans to enter the budding metaverse and offer branded non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

Pursuant to American Express’ filing, the registration filing includes the company’s logo and slogans, including AMEX, SHOP SMALL, and MEMBERSHIP REWARDS. Michael Kondoudis, a licensed metaverse trademark attorney, made the announcement in a tweet posted on Tuesday. In a press release, Kondoudis explained:

“American Express is a leading financial brand, and the value attached to the brand is significant. Clearly, American Express sees the potential of the metaverse and is preparing its trademarks and brand for the virtual economy that will dominate it.”

Furthermore, Kondoudis also stated applications to the US Patent and Trademark Office were submitted on March 9th. Among the details contained were crypto-focused and fintech-inclined services. Some of these are plans to offer NFT backed multimedia, cryptocurrency services, virtual banking, and exchange services.

American Express is now one of the latest mega platforms to jump on the metaverse bandwagon. This space saw an exponential surge in public interest throughout last year and is well on course to continue in 2022. Several core components of the metaverse, such as virtual and augmented reality, NFTs, Web3, and crypto have been generating a buzz among businesses and celebrities alike.
