Australian Baseball Club Perth Heat Looks to Start Paying Athletes and Staff in BTC

Athletes

Perth Heat, an Australian baseball club, announced that it will start paying its professional athletes and members of staff in Bitcoin (BTC). To facilitate this, Perth Heat is partnering with OpenNode (Lightning Network), a Bitcoin payment processor headquartered in Los Angeles, California.

Pursuant to the deal, Perth Heat, which now calls itself “the Bitcoin baseball team,” will send and receive payments in BTC over the Lightning Network. Furthermore, the collaboration between the two organizations also means that Perth Heat can now also receive payments in BTC for other transactions. These include merchandising, sponsorships, and other revenue streams. As a matter of fact, the Australian baseball club currently has Bitcoin-branded merchandise listed on its official website. Additionally, to underscore this commitment to the digital currency, part of Perth Heat’s issued statement read:

“As part of this sporting world exclusive, Perth Heat will hold Bitcoin on the club’s balance sheet.”

Perth Heat CEO Steven Nelkovski weighed in on this recent development. Nelkovski believes that his organization’s move to integrate with BTC is a step in the right direction. The CEO also further states that others can adopt this idea and subsequently tailor it to suit their monetary system.

Additionally, Perth Heat’s chief Bitcoin officer Patrick O’Sullivan also seemed to echo Nelkovski’s comments. Plus, he also suggested that “…the future of money and corporate treasuries will live on the Bitcoin blockchain.”
