Cardano Gets Set for Significant Upgrade in January 2025

Cardano (ADA) is preparing for a potentially transformative year in 2025, with founder Charles Hoskinson signaling major upgrades that could elevate the cryptocurrency’s standing in the market. As January begins, ADA is setting the stage for significant growth in the months ahead, positioning itself to compete with leading crypto assets.

Cardano is preparing for the Plomin hard fork, a key upgrade expected in January 2025 that will transition the network to decentralized governance under CIP-1694. The governance action was submitted on-chain on December 20, 2024, marking the end of the technical bootstrapping phase.

The upgrade could be activated between January 14 and January 29, depending on stake pool operator (SPO) votes and Intersect Constitutional Committee (ICC) approval. Voting ends on January 24, with a 51% stake approval required for ratification.

The Cardano community and several dApps and exchanges, including Coinbase, Crypto.com, Kraken, and OKX, have signaled readiness for the upgrade. As of January 6, 79% of SPOs are running the required node version, with 209 out of 213 votes in favor of the hard fork, representing 17% of the stake.

The Plomin hard fork marks a milestone in Cardano’s evolution, setting the stage for a self-governing blockchain and advancing its decentralization efforts in the crypto landscape.
