Standard Chartered

Cardano developer Input Output Hong Kong has partnered with the Ethiopian government to roll out blockchain-based ID to African students. The partnership is aimed at digitizing the educational sector in Ethiopia.

The director for African operations at IOHK, John O’Connor, commented on the joint venture. In a blog post, the director said that IOHK’s decentralized identity solution Atala PRISM would be used for the blockchain-based IDs. The firm will offer the identity solution to thousands of schools in Ethiopia.

Additionally, the identity solution will be used to digitally verify students’ grades, “remotely monitor school performance, and boost education and employment.”

The company added:

“This will provide all students with blockchain-verified digital qualifications to reduce fraudulent university and job applications, and increase social mobility by allowing employers to verify all applicant’s grades without third-party agencies.”

Initially, 3,500 schools, including 5 million students and 750,000 teachers, will benefit from Ethiopia’s transformation into digital identity. The company said that the digitization could extend to tertiary institutions.

IOHK founder and CEO Charles Hoskinson had revealed that the company is working on expanding its business in Africa. The CEO said that IOHK would “scale up resources there into the eight figures because there’s a lot good news coming.”

The CEO’s hint came after saying that Cardano will achieve all its set goals in 2021.
