Cryptocurrency Mining Faces Possible Ban in North Carolina County

Buncombe County in North Carolina is considering a one-year pause on cryptocurrency mining to assess its environmental impact and develop necessary regulations.

The county plans to define “cryptocurrency mining” as a distinct land use and create standards and mitigation methods for activities that could potentially harm the natural environment.

During the year-long moratorium, Buncombe County will not issue zoning permits for any cryptocurrency mining activities in any of its districts.

This will allow the county to maintain the status quo while it develops appropriate regulations for the industry. The moratorium will begin on May 2, 2023, and end on May 1, 2024.

The county will also make amendments to its zoning ordinance to address any negative effects associated with cryptocurrency mining and ensure that the industry operates under appropriate regulations to minimize environmental harm and community disruption.
