E-commerce company eBay said its customers can now pay global merchants with cryptocurrencies. The company’s CEO Jamie Iannone revealed the company’s crypto payment integration in an interview with CNBC.
Noting that eBay is continually expanding its payment methods, Iannone said the company now supports Apple Pay and Google Pay.
In addition to exploring crypto payments on the marketplace, Iannone also said the company is also keenly watching the non-fungible tokens (NFTs) sector. eBay’s plan to enter the NFT space is coming amid the ongoing expansion in the market. Since the year started, NFTs has been quite the trend as artists generate millions and several individuals venture into the space.
Speaking further, Iannone explained that crypto payments will serve the 187 million buyers on its platform. The company continued:
“One of the great things about eBay is when there’s a new trend, it just shows up on eBay. That’s what we’re seeing in areas like NFT, which we’re looking at how we can explore that better because eBay is really known as the place to transact goods.”
Iannone also suggested that eBay has indirectly been in the NFT space for a while. According to him, coveted items have been live on eBay for a long time.
“When you think about collectibles, everything that’s really collectible has been on eBay for decades.”
