The Ethereum Name Service (ENS) has filed a petition against Unstoppable Domains (UD) with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), contesting the validity of a patent obtained by UD in 2023.

The crypto community has voiced varied perspectives following Ethereum Name Service’s (ENS) decision to officially contest a US patent issued to Unstoppable Domains (UD). ENS filed a petition with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on May 2, citing the goal of preserving the collaborative nature of the web.

ENS alleges that UD’s patent infringes on technology developed and open-sourced by ENS. Despite ENS’s efforts to avoid a legal dispute, UD has defended the patent, claiming it was reviewed by an examiner with citations to ENS in place.

ENS challenges UD to identify any innovations in the patent not already present in ENS’s technology.

UD maintains its stance, citing common industry practices and a prior non-assertion pledge. Meanwhile, UD raised significant funding in 2022, contrasting with ENS’s decentralized approach.
