A new HBO documentary claims to have identified the elusive creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto, in a revelation that could significantly impact the crypto market and beyond.
Directed by Emmy-nominated Cullen Hoback, known for exposing the QAnon conspiracy in Q: Into the Storm, the documentary’s findings, if widely accepted, could shake the financial world and even influence the U.S. presidential election. Donald Trump, a crypto advocate, has gained considerable support from the crypto community, adding political stakes to the mystery.
Bitcoin, created in 2009, has since become the largest cryptocurrency and a trillion-dollar asset class, supported by figures like Elon Musk. Satoshi Nakamoto believed to control around 1.1 million BTC, could potentially be one of the wealthiest people in the world, though it’s unclear if Nakamoto still has access to these funds.
The documentary’s release coincides with the movement of 250 BTC from dormant Satoshi-era wallets, raising questions about Nakamoto’s early collaborators.
The identity of Nakamoto has remained one of the crypto world’s biggest mysteries since he disappeared in 2010. Previous attempts to unmask Nakamoto, including journalist Leah McGrath Goodman’s mistaken identification of Dorian Nakamoto and Craig Wright’s unproven claims, have failed.
Many in the Bitcoin community oppose attempts to reveal Nakamoto’s identity, emphasizing the right to privacy. Peter McCormack, a Bitcoin advocate, stated, “Satoshi gave the world a profound gift but deliberately chose to remain anonymous. Efforts to unmask them are not just irresponsible but potentially dangerous.”
