Hong Kong: Teen Rescued, 3 Held in Crypto Attack

Last month, Hong Kong authorities rescued a 19-year-old and detained three teenagers following a distressing incident involving assault and unlawful detention. The police are actively pursuing six additional suspects, identified as four males and two females.

The victim was lured to a meeting under the guise of crypto trading but was instead subjected to demands for HK$180,000 in crypto profits and faced threats and assault by two suspects wielding baseball bats.

Alerted by a friend, the victim sought help from law enforcement, leading to the apprehension of three suspects, while six others fled. The arrested individuals, aged 16 to 19, face charges including assault, unlawful detention, and blackmail.

Hong Kong has witnessed a surge in digital asset-related crimes in recent years, with reported cases tripling from 1,397 to 3,415, and involved amounts rising from HKD 824 million to HKD 4.398 billion. Similar crypto-related crimes have been reported globally, including in India, South Korea, and Russia.
