Microsoft Set To Tackle Piracy Using the Ethereum Blockchain

Blockchain

Microsoft has announced its intention to fight piracy using blockchain technology. According to a publication from the company’s research department, Microsoft intends to use a blockchain-based incentive system.

Titled “Argus: A Fully Transparent Incentive System for Anti-Piracy Campaigns”, the paper relays a new system that provides a trustless mechanism and protects data simultaneously. Argus is powered by the Ethereum blockchain. According to the paper:

“We see this as a distributed system problem…In the implementation, we overcome a set of unavoidable obstacles to ensure security despite full transparency.”

Microsoft’s Argus system will use the Ethereum blockchain to backtrace any pirated content to its original source, using a corresponding watermark algorithm. The system will also infuse a “proof of leakage” feature on reports of leaked content, so that only the owner can report a watermarked copy.

In March last year, Microsoft filed a patent for a new cryptocurrency and mining system. In a publication titled “Cryptocurrency System Using Body Activity Data”, Microsoft explains that the new mining system will use a person’s body activity instead of mining rigs and other related equipment.

The document also explains that not a lot of activity would be required all the time. It specifies that activity such as “viewing an advertisement or using certain internet services” might suffice.
