In a significant development following the Poloniex hack, the hacker behind the $125 million theft last November transferred 1,100 ether (ETH) to the coin mixer Tornado Cash.
This move, totaling approximately $3.3 million, occurred after the funds had been dormant for nearly six months. The hacker sent 11 batches of 100 ETH each to Tornado Cash, marking a notable development in the aftermath of the hack.
Before this, the hacker moved 501 BTC valued at $32 million to an undisclosed wallet on April 30, maintaining a total of $181 million across various blockchains. The Poloniex exchange, which suffered the major hack, lost an estimated $125 million.
Multiple wallets across various blockchains were targeted, with the “Poloniex Hacker” wallet sending $114 million worth of tokens from Poloniex over 357 transactions. Tornado Cash, known for mixing crypto tokens to obfuscate their origins, has faced scrutiny for its use by the North Korean hacking group Lazarus.
Despite sanctions and charges, Lazarus Group continues to use Tornado Cash, highlighting the ongoing battle between regulators and cyber criminals.
The recent transfer of $3.3 million worth of ETH to Tornado Cash by the Poloniex hacker underscores the challenges in combating illicit activities in the crypto space.
