Russel Okung is a football player who stars in the NFL, where he is currently under contract for the Carolina Panthers. The thirty-two-year-old veteran has been in the league for a long time, and it seems its not just out on the football field where the offensive linesman makes his smart moves. In December 2020, the player chose to have half of his $13 million salary in bitcoin. He announced this intention by first putting out a tweet that simply said, ‘Pay me in Bitcoin’ back on May 14th, 2019. Then, obviously, when his wish had finally been granted, he followed it up by tweeting ‘Paid in Bitcoin’ on December 29th, 2020.

With how much the Bitcoin currency continues to rise, many argue that because Okung made this clever move, he is, technically, one of the highest-paid players in the league. Some have even argued on Twitter that Okung might even be the highest-paid player in NFL history, because of how high the bitcoins value could rise. Either way, we’re sure Okung is just happy to sit back and know he has his retirement fund sorted.

Trevor Lawrence

The twenty-one-year-old quarterback Trevor Lawrence was picked first in the 2021 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars back in May. Being chosen first in the draft is a huge deal, and now Lawrence has the eyes of the football world on him, as he tries to navigate life as a pro. One way that he, already, has attracted attention is by asking for his signing bonus to be converted into cryptocurrencies by using the crypto firm Blockfolio. This is because he has now partnered with the crypto management and trading company, and will be endorsing the company as they both move forwards. His signing bonus is reported to be around a staggering $24 million. That’s able to buy a heck of a lot of cryptocurrencies.

The team that he’s now playing for, the Jacksonville Jaguars, is actually one of only four NFL teams that have never made the Super Bowl. Jaguars’ fans will be severely hoping that the talented youngster can turn their fortunes around. Currently, the team is priced at the long odds of 101.00, at most online bookmakers, to win the Super Bowl this season.

Ok, this entry isn’t just one athlete, but is an actual whole sports team. The Sacramento Kings are a basketball team that plays in the Western Conference Pacific Division in the NBA. Their owner, Vivek Ranadivé, decided back in April that he will now offer to pay all his players and coaches in bitcoin, as was reported on Forbes. This will make the Kings the first major professional sports franchise to fully offer cryptocurrency as an authorized form of payment.
