Online bookmaker Sportsbet.io has teamed up with Australian cricket legend Brett Lee to support the current COVID-19 crisis badly hitting India. Both of them are trying to fund medical supplies and other COVID-specific endeavors to help the country scale through the debilitating problem.
Brett Lee began by donating one Bitcoin to efforts in India through CryptoRelief.in, a community fund created by Sandeep Nailwal, who also co-founded Polygon. The relief effort was matched by Sportsbet.io, which also donated one Bitcoin to the cause. Together, their donations are currently worth more than $155,000.
According to Lee, India is a “second home” that has continuously supported him, professionally and otherwise. He said:
“It saddens me deeply to see people suffering due to the ongoing pandemic…I feel privileged to be in a position of making a difference and with that in mind, I’d like to donate 1 BTC to Crypto Relief to help with [the] purchase of oxygen supplies for the hospitals across India.”
According to Sportsbet.io’s Director of Sportsbook, Joe McCallum, over $2 million in cryptocurrency has been channeled to helping India’s problem.
India has been quite badly hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. Media reports say that the current second wave is so deadly that Delhi is slowly running out of spaces for cremations.
