On December 5, 2023, Lugano, Switzerland, made a groundbreaking announcement, revealing plans to accept Bitcoin (BTC) and Tether (USDT) for tax payments and municipal fees as part of its collaborative initiative, Plan B. This move signifies a significant step toward integrating Bitcoin technology into the city’s financial landscape.

Previously limited to the official online portal, crypto payments in Lugano will now cover all invoices, allowing residents and businesses to use their preferred mobile wallets by scanning the QR code. Bitcoin (BTC) and Tether (USDT), leading assets in their categories, are the accepted cryptocurrencies.

Bitcoin Suisse, playing a crucial role in Lugano’s Plan B collaboration with Tether, will manage the technical aspects of the payment solution, providing a user-friendly method for BTC and USDT payments.

Armin Schmid, Chief Product Officer at Bitcoin Suisse, expresses enthusiasm for supporting Lugano in accelerating blockchain technology adoption, noting the positive trend among Swiss municipalities.

Bitcoin Suisse not only takes pride in facilitating Lugano’s crypto payments but also extends its services to other Swiss regions.

Lugano joins the ranks of progressive Swiss cities like Zug and Zermatt that have embraced cryptocurrency payments, reinforcing Switzerland’s leading position in crypto adoption.
