Taiwan Mobile Enters Crypto With New License

Taiwan Mobile, the country’s second-largest telecom operator, received approval from the Financial Supervisory Commission (FSC) on July 5 to offer crypto services, becoming Taiwan’s 26th registered virtual asset service provider (VASP). This move has led to speculation about the company’s future in the cryptocurrency market, including potential collaborations and investments, possibly establishing a cryptocurrency exchange.

Taiwan’s crypto regulatory environment has evolved rapidly, with strict anti-money laundering (AML) regulations implemented in 2021 and strengthened in 2023. These developments include the formation of the Taiwan Virtual Asset Service Provider Association, which works with government agencies to combat fraud.

The Ministry of Justice also proposed amendments to AML laws to include digital asset providers, with potential penalties for non-compliance.

Taiwan Mobile’s entry into the crypto market aligns with the nation’s efforts to create a transparent and equitable system for cryptocurrencies, highlighting Taiwan’s commitment to a crypto-friendly environment and increased retail investor access to digital assets.
