Pavel Durov, the creator of Telegram, offers the concept of a new marketplace where users may exchange usernames using “NFT-like smart contracts.” The new feature will most likely be hosted by the Durov-designed TON blockchain, he claimed. Users will be able to transfer usernames through the marketplace.
“Imagine how successful Telegram with its 700 million users could be if we put reserved @ usernames, group and channel links for auction,” Durov wrote on Monday. “In addition to millions of catchy t.me addresses like @storm or @royal, all four-letter usernames could be made available for sale.”
TON increased by about 10% following Durov’s message. An inquiry for comments was not immediately answered by the business.
Durov wants to hold decentralized sales on the TON blockchain, which he created, and claims that the Telegram team can “write bullet-proof smart contracts for TON.” He mentioned the accomplishments of a recent auction held by TON for domain and wallet names, citing the sales of wallet.ton for 215,250 Toncoin (about $260,000) and casino.ton for roughly $244,000, respectively.
“Let’s see if we can add a little bit of Web 3.0 to Telegram in the coming weeks,” Durov said.
He suggested that all four-letter usernames, including @bank, @club, and @game, might be made available for purchase in addition to t.me addresses like @storm or @royal, he suggested.
TON was initially created by Telegram, but in June 2020, community members took over the management of the blockchain. As part of a settlement agreement with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which filed a lawsuit against Telegram for allegedly executing an unregistered securities sale for $1.7 billion in the form of GRAM tokens, the company was required to forfeit ownership.
