This move follows a 25% increase in Telegram’s Kazakh user base since 2023, totaling over 12.5 million. The new office aligns with recent legislative changes requiring platforms like Telegram, WhatsApp, and TikTok to establish local offices to comply with regulations.
Telegram has faced scrutiny for content control, particularly after French authorities indicted its founder, Pavel Durov, for failing to prevent illegal activities.
In response, Telegram has implemented measures like sharing user data with authorities and using AI to block illicit content. The office in Kazakhstan marks a significant step in the platform’s global regulatory compliance efforts.
Telegram’s 2023 financial report revealed $400 million in digital assets and $342.5 million in revenue, though it posted a $108 million operating loss.
