WazirX Hacker Moves $6.5 Million in ETH to Tornado Cash

A wallet address linked to the hacker who stole over $235 million from the Indian crypto exchange WazirX recently transferred $6.5 million in cryptocurrency to the mixing service Tornado Cash.

Blockchain security platform Cyvers Alerts flagged the transaction in a September 3 post on X. According to their report, the hacker sent 2,600 ETH to Tornado Cash in an attempt to launder the stolen funds.

Prior to this transfer, the wallet held $6.7 million in crypto. Following 26 separate ETH transactions, each transferring 100 ETH to the mixer, the wallet now holds around $154,000. All of these transactions were completed within an hour, according to data from DeBank.

These activities coincide with WazirX opening Indian Rupee (INR) withdrawals for its customers affected by the hack. Users can now withdraw up to 66% of their INR balances, as the remaining funds are “frozen” due to ongoing investigations by various law enforcement agencies, as stated by WazirX on August 23.

Originally, WazirX planned to open withdrawals on September 9, but the platform decided to allow INR withdrawals a week early, starting on August 26, to give users quicker access to their funds.

This early access is part of WazirX’s phased plan to restore normal operations. However, the exchange noted that certain legal issues are still preventing crypto withdrawals and that it continues to pursue legal actions in Singapore as part of its ongoing restructuring efforts.
