Ethereum Research Team Cracks Code on Centralization Issue

New research proposes a decentralized random block proposal system to reduce Ethereum’s centralization, where 80% of blocks are controlled by two entities.

The system would replace specialized builders with a uniform random algorithm, preventing manipulation and eliminating block-level MEV tactics like arbitrage and front-running. It could also cut Ethereum’s slot time from 12 seconds to 6–8 seconds, supporting future Danksharding needs.

The research coincides with leadership changes at the Ethereum Foundation, with Hsiao-Wei Wang and Tomasz Stanczak appointed as co-executive directors.

Core developer Tim Beiko sees this as a major turning point, emphasizing the need to balance optimization with Ethereum’s core values. While optimistic, he acknowledges the challenges ahead in ensuring Ethereum’s long-term success.

Vitalik Buterin sparked debate earlier in the week by calling for “young blood” in Ethereum, suggesting that many original contributors (OGs) have become “jaded.” He argued that the next generation must carry the Cypherpunk vision forward.

His comments drew pushback from Uniswap CEO Hayden Adams and former Web3 Foundation director Ryan Zurrer, who defended OGs as essential to Ethereum’s growth and values. The discussion underscores broader tensions around Ethereum’s evolution, leadership shifts, and the balance between innovation and tradition.
