Bitcoin Core Devs’ OP_Return Plan Sparks Controversy

Bitcoin Core developers are considering a major change: removing the 80-byte limit on OP_RETURN outputs in an upcoming software update.

This feature, which allows users to embed data into Bitcoin transactions, surged in use during the 2024 inscription boom. Developer Greg Sanders argues that the limit now does more harm than good, pushing users to use more disruptive methods that clog the UTXO set.

By lifting the cap, he believes the network can encourage cleaner and more transparent on-chain behavior. While many developers support the change, it’s sparked controversy.

Critics, including JAN3 CEO Samson Mow, warn it could lead to spam and a lack of community consensus. The debate remains active on GitHub and social media, with no official release date yet.
