Bitcoin Core Policy Update Ignites Community Fury

Bitcoin Core 0.17.0 | Bitcoin Core upgrade

A recent op-ed by Bitcoin Core contributors has reignited debate within the Bitcoin community by endorsing non-financial use cases like Ordinals and NFTs. The controversy centers on the removal of Bitcoin Core’s 80-byte limit on OP_RETURN, a function that allows additional data to be attached to transactions.

Starting in the next software release, Bitcoin Core will no longer enforce a strict cap, promoting a more open and censorship-resistant relay policy. While node operators can still choose not to forward these larger transactions, critics argue that this move opens the door to blockchain bloat, higher fees, and a shift away from Bitcoin’s core financial purpose.

Prominent developer Luke Dashjr and others have slammed the change, warning it could lead to increased spam and further divide the community. In response, some users are migrating to alternative software like Bitcoin Knots, which retains stricter data limits.

The debate underscores a growing divide: one side pushing for innovation and broader use cases, and the other advocating for Bitcoin to remain a lean, payment-focused protocol. This development could shape Bitcoin’s direction for years to come.
