Binance Chief Blasts Nigeria Over Its Executive Imprisonment

Richard Teng has condemned the Nigerian government for its “inhumane treatment” of Tigran Gambaryan, Binance’s Head of Crime Compliance, who has been detained for six months.

A recently surfaced video shows Gambaryan in visible distress, pleading for a wheelchair but being forced to use a single crutch. Concerns about his deteriorating health, including a herniated disc, pneumonia, and malaria, have fueled calls for his release.

Teng urged for Gambaryan’s return home for medical care, while his lawyers have filed for bail on medical grounds. However, Nigerian prosecutors argue his condition is not as serious as claimed. Despite a court order for a wheelchair, concerns about Gambaryan’s health continue, with his wife, Yuki, calling for U.S. authorities to take stronger action.

Nigeria, Africa’s leading crypto economy by trade volume, has experienced increased cryptocurrency use due to rising inflation and a depreciating local currency. Amid this, Binance’s Africa regional manager, Nadeem Anjarwalla, allegedly fled Nigeria with a smuggled passport.

In March, Binance halted naira trading on its platform following accusations from authorities that the exchange was involved in money laundering and terrorism financing.
