Cardano Grows Its Block Size & Smart Contract Memory Boost

Cardano is growing its block size by 11% from 72KB to 80KB to address scaling challenges. In addition, according to the protocol’s core development team, Cardano’s smart contract platform Plutus will also get a memory boost. Input-Output announced in a recent tweet:

“NETWORK UPDATE: Today, we have proposed the next parameter update as we continue to increase #Cardano network capacity in line with the plan. The proposal will increase block size by a further 8KB taking it from 72KB to 80KB.”

Block size refers to the maximum data capacity available to a single block on a network. With a larger block size, Cardano would facilitate the addition of more transactions to new blocks – boosting scalability. Also, by enhancing Cardano’s smart contract execution platform Plutus, from 12.5 million to 14 million memory units, more data items will be processed. Furthermore, the Input-Output team also explained that the updates would provide added resources for “Plutus scripts to improve dApp user experience.” This would also result in an increase in overall network capacity. According to reports, both improvements will take place on Friday, February 4th.

Cardano is undertaking these improvements to become more scalable this year and close the gap on Layer 1 competitors. In so doing, the blockchain platform also seeks to address its congestion issues.
