NFT Artist Beeple Alerts Discord Users About a Wallet Drainer Bug

Mike “Beeple” Winkelmann, a well-known NFT artist, announced today that links to his Discord server have been hacked and altered, redirecting fans and followers to a fake copycat server that can steal NFTs and tokens from users who interact with it.

“Massive thanks again to Discord for being garbage,” Beeple tweeted, along with claims that links to his server had been compromised.

Beeple is a well-known digital artist whose March 2021 sale of Ethereum NFT “Everydays: The First 5,000 Days” set the record for top all-time single NFT sale at $69.3 million. His other work includes last year’s “HUMAN ONE,” a hybrid digital/physical piece that sold for $28.9 million at auction last year.

Beeple’s server is intended for collectors of his NFT work, and based on his tweet, it appears that verification of ownership is required by connecting an Ethereum wallet containing one of the eligible NFTs. If a user connects that wallet to this malicious copycat server, the perpetrators may be able to steal any NFTs or tokens stored in the wallet.

In recent months, the number of such scams has increased as attackers use hijacked accounts to spread malicious “wallet draining” links. Many well-known projects and artists have been hacked on Twitter, including Beeple himself in May, but these scams have also been carried out on Discord and Instagram.

When a user connects to the smart contract—the computer code that powers NFT projects and decentralized apps—and grants broad access permissions to what they believe is a trusted application, they may unintentionally allow attackers to steal assets from their wallet.

Beeple did not provide specific examples of users who claimed to have been affected by the malicious Discord links. While many Web3 projects and creators use Discord to build community and interact with supporters, the gaming-focused chat service has also become a punching bag for outspoken creators and collectors who have been victims of such scams.
