South China Morning Post (SCMP), a newspaper company based in Hong Kong, is set to develop Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs). The NFTs will help protect historical assets and use “ARTIFACT,” a new token standard.
SCMP’s collection of data visualizations, infographics, visual illustrations, and documentary photography will influence the NFTs in a journalistic representation called the “first drafts of history.” The draft contains photographs, texts, illustrations, and cartoons that the SCMP has gathered for more than a century.
The veteran newspaper presented an analysis of the project in its ARTIFACT Litepaper, a regulated metadata structure. SCMP will use the structure to preserve important moments from its 118-year-old collection of media assets by ensuring circulation and allotting ownership.
SCMP’s CEO, Gary Liu, said:
“Blockchain offers immense potential to immutably preserve journalism that witnesses and explains history. The ‘ARTIFACT’ project is an opportunity to discover, collect, showcase, trade, and reanimate meaningful moments and objects from our collective human experience.”
Liu also pointed out that players will experience and learn about Hong Kong’s historical complexities and view events from Hong Kong in the 1950s through SCMP’s report. To give players this experience, the newspaper will integrate landmarks like the Star Ferry and the Kowloon Wall City into the blockchain-based metaverse. SCMP has also signed an agreement with Ethereum-based metaverse, The Sandbox, to recreate history and draw the interest of a large audience.
